Today’s Priorities

TODAY’S PRIORITIES

What are your creative priorities today? Have you identified them yet? Do you know why you chose one venue over another? Do you know how much you are making from each sale? Have you thought about establishing long-term business goals, in addition to your current goals?

What are those areas that most urgently require your attention? Are you clear about them? Do you know what needs to be paid attention to first, second and third? Or do you move ‘by inspiration’ from one task to another, following a general plan? Or do you follow a business plan at all?

In short, what are you doing to help yourself expand your creativity and build your business?

I stress the adoption of additional structure into your business as you continue to grow. I emphasize it because it is such a difficult area for me to master. It is such a temptation, in my mind, to live by ‘inspiration’. Living by this type of ‘inspiration’ just leads me to ‘magical thinking’ and unhealthy daydreaming. You can plan, dream and plan some more, but unless you put those plans into action, your business will never grow, nor will your creativity skills. The type of inspiration that I’m talking about, is the myriad of reasons creative people find for not doing what it takes to moves themselves and their business forward. Those reasons won’t stand a chance of helping you move forward. They will only make you feel good for awhile. Magical thinking always makes me feel good, but it doesn’t help me finish what I started or plan for what I want to complete next. Magical thinking may temporarily push away doubts, nosey customers and friends or even deflect pointed questions from your coach or mentor. But magical thinking, has no power to help you push through experiencing uncomfortable feelings and make thosevaluable business building changes.

I’ve been journaling about some of my excuses this summer. I’ve made many excuses for my business actions in several area including: creative productivity, display issues and sales.
I’ve learned:
–some humility. (at least I hope so)
–to trust someone to hear my ramblings and to support me as I’ve come clean and become more clear about what I used to want and what I want now.
–that I want to be more creative and
