My Parakeet

My Parakeet

My parakeet relies a lot on my non-verbal responses to guide his own behavior. He is very tuned into my moods as most birds are to their owners.

He can tell by the sound of my voice whether or not, I’m upset, happy or just preoccupied.

Sometimes I feel guilty because I can’t hide much from him, especially when I’m having a bad day.

But, sometimes, since I sit with my back to him when I’m at the computer, I do use hand signals. When he thinks he’s being ignored I will wave at him, even when I can’t talk to him. That helps to a point. But by that time, he usually wants a verbal response and he will keep chirping until I give him one.

If I move my arms and hands too quickly he may go hide in the corner of his cage. He may think I’m a predator and not the ‘birdmom’ that he knows. So, I try to keep my arm movements to a minimum when I’m near the cage.

That’s a lesson in how my bird communicates with me on a daily basis.
